Caring and Compassionate Pet Euthanasia
Euthanasia is something most people would rather not think about, unfortunately, horses become old and ill, and when they appear to be suffering, sometimes horse euthanasia is the most caring and compassionate thing a horse owner can do for their horse.
Understanding When It's Time to Say Goodbye
It can be difficult for horse owners to determine when it’s time to say goodbye to their beloved horses, especially if your horse has good days and bad days. If you are unsure as to whether it’s time to say goodbye, Centennial Equine Sports Medicine can evaluate your horse’s health and answer your questions in order to help you make a decision.
1. Your Pet Is in Chronic Pain that Cannot Be Alleviated With Medication
2. Your Pet Has Stopped Eating and/or Lost Weight
3. Your Pet Has Chronic Vomiting and Diarrhea that Cannot Be Controlled
4. Your Pet’s Activity Levels Have Dropped
5. Your Pet Can No Longer Stand or Walk on His or Her Own
In-Office Pet Euthanasia
Many horse owners choose in-office horse euthanasia. However, they still want their horses to be comfortable for the journey and to help reduce horse anxiety, and Centennial Equine Sports Medicine can help you make your horse’s final car ride more comfortable by providing you with a sedative that you can give to your horse prior to arriving at our veterinary office.
Once you arrive in our office, you will have the option of choosing how involved you wish to be in your horse’s final moments. If you wish to stay with your beloved dog or cat throughout their final moments, our team will escort you to a private room where you can say your goodbyes and hold your horse while he or she passes.
During the procedure, your veterinarian will give your horse a sedative to put them to sleep then inject the medications that help your horse pass peacefully. Once your horse has passed, you will have the option to take your horse back home for burial, or we can help you send your horse to a place where he or she can be cremated and you can retrieve the ash at a later date.
At-Home Pet Euthanasia
An increasing number of horse owners are choosing at-home horse euthanasia in order to help their horses as comfortable as possible and in a familiar environment. The process for at-home horse euthanasia is essentially the same as at an office. The only difference is that our veterinarian brings the medications to your home to be administered. Being at home also gives you the option of having your horse put to sleep either indoors or outdoors, depending on which you think your horse would prefer. Once the medication has been administered and your horse has passed peacefully, you will be given time to grieve. When you and your family members are ready, your veterinarian can remove your horse from your home, or we can help you find a place to have your horse cremated in Pagosa Springs.
